Mediclinic

Who We Are

Mediclinic Southern Africa's (MCSA) vision is to enhance the quality of life for patients by providing cost-efficient healthcare in such a way that the company will be regarded as the international benchmark of private acute-care hospital services by patients, doctors and funders of healthcare.

The company is one of three global platforms on which the Mediclinic Group operates. Besides 49 hospitals in South Africa and three in Namibia, the group has 14 private acute care facilities in Switzerland and 10 medical facilities in Dubai.

Since its founding as a national healthcare provider in 1983, MCSA's corporate social investment (CSI) priority was to support grassroots initiatives and programmes for the general upliftment of society. The new strategy, established in 2007, aims to amplify the benefit of the company's social investment and provide a greater impact within host communities.

This involves a three-tier structure aimed at contributing to the well-being of the communities in which they operate by investing in programmes which address socio-economic problems. Public private initiatives are at the forefront of MSCA's structured CSI activities and the company has partnered with several public sector hospitals to provide much needed surgical support by performing cataract operations, prostatectomies and tonsillectomies at our hospitals.

The second tier comprises joint ventures with approved non-profit organisations focused on four areas: sport, health, education and welfare. Thirdly, volunteerism offers MCSA staff the opportunity to become involved in well-managed and planned CSI programmes.

Mediclinic Southern Africa was assessed by an accredited verification agency against the generic BBBEE scorecard criteria of the Department of Trade and Industry. This assessment indicates a total score of 75.27, which means an improvement from a Level 4 to Level 3 contributor for 2011.

Besides the fact that environmental management forms an integral part of Mediclinic Corporation's strategy, it is vital in maintaining the group's social responsibility investment (SRI) index rating on the Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE). The group qualified for the sixth time consecutively at the end of 2010.

Through implementing systems and awareness projects, Mediclinic Southern Africa is broadening its commitment to quality care to include a culture of environmental responsibility.

To date a total of 33 of the 52 Mediclinic Southern Africa hospitals are certified with ISO 14001:2004 compliance by external auditor NQA Global Assurance in London, this includes the group's latest addition, Cape Gate Mediclinic.

When Cape Gate Mediclinic opened its doors in February 2010, it represented a new generation of environmentally friendly hospitals. From the outset the aim was to include green design solutions ranging from maximising natural light to innovative water saving and insulation technology.
Initiatives built around ISO standards have proven successful and a staff awareness campaign, related to energy and water savings across 13 hospitals, has been a major component contributing around R363-million to the MCSA bottom line.

In addition Mediclinic Corporation received a joint second ranking in the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index and Performance Rating of the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) 2010. It outperformed 70 other businesses on the JSE Top 100 list in managing its carbon footprint. The CDP is a JSE initiative in which 74 listed companies volunteered information on their carbon emissions.
