Black Oystercatcher

Who We Are

Black Oystercatcher is a range of sought after boutique wines from the coastal Agulhas district and Elim wine ward in South Africa. This ward, the newest of the maritime vine-yards, is one of the most closely watched wine producing regions in the world, situated on the southern coastal lowlands, adjacent to the small missionary village of Elim on the southernmost tip of Africa. The prevailing, cool summer winds ensure a very cool ripening climate, perfect for crisp and mineral White wine styles with a tropical fruit flavour and red varietals that produce elegant, fruity red wines.

Black Oystercatcher wine, a rare gem of the region, is aptly named after the endangered ocean birds that thrive along the coastline. Birds that, like the Human family who have farmed here for generations, live long lives, have an incredible sense of family, are passionate and protective of their precious habitat, and cherish life. The Humans, unlike their feathered friends, also cherish fine South African wine.

Black Oystercatcher Wines & Conservation

Dirk Human, owner and winemaker of Black Oystercatcher Wines is one of the founding members of the Nuwerjaars Wetland SMA.

The 22 owners of the properties that collectively form the core of the Nuwejaars Wetland ecosystem during 2003 resolved to establish a Special Management Area (SMA) over their collective properties spanning 44 000 ha that would serve as a unique integrated land use management system based upon the principles of holistic and integrated planning and public-private community partnership.

The Nuwejaars Wetland SMA is defined as ‘an area of excellence and good practice', where the ethos of sustainable development is served in practice. It is further described as a cadastral geographical unit, which is formally recognised and managed as an area where environmental sustainability is promoted in practice and in accordance with international standards for environmental sustainability. An application for Environmental Protective Status was submitted to the Minister during April 2010.

Ultimate Vision to....
Create a sustainable ecology, which ensures the protection of the Nuwejaars
Wetland Ecosystem, enhances the heritage and culture of the sub-region, generates benefit for all stakeholders, helps meet social and environmental requirements, and encourages community lifestyles compatible with environmental sustainability.

Elim Wine Farms Lead in Unique Green Venture

17 Nov 2011

A group of landowners and communities in the Overberg in South Africa are behind the first dedicated integrated land management strategy of its kind in the world. Through the venture, known as the Nuwejaars Wetland Special Management Area (NWSMA), 25 landowners are collectively managing their land for conservation, while promoting sustainable agriculture. And the Elim Wine Ward - the newest wine ward in South Africa - is a member of this pioneering venture.
