Some of Europcar's social responsibility initiatives include:

Member of Nelson Mandela Children's Fund - Europcar has achieved President's Club status with the fund and is the only car rental organisation associated with the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund. A percentage of each tourist's rental is donated to the fund.

Skills Development - We have set up a dedicated training and development department which is tasked with the upliftment of skills in all areas of the business. We have both internal and external training programs targeted at Historically Disadvantaged Individuals (HDI) candidates at all levels of the business with preference being given to HDI candidates when selecting candidates for any training. Key in our transformation strategy is the upliftment and development of staff for promotion from within.

Learnership Programme: For the past number of years, Europcar has offered Learnership opportunities as one of the components of our transformation strategy. These Learnership programmes aim to fulfil both needs within the business but also addresses national scarce and critical skills gaps. For the 2010/11 skills year Europcar implemented two Learnership programmes for 46 HDI candidates:

• Certificate in Travel (NQF 5): This programme have 15 unemployed young people undertaking the National a programme that not only addresses the Tourism Sector Skills Plan, but also contributes to the pool of talent that will boost the future of tourism in South Africa.
• National Certificate in Generic Management (NQF 5) programme have 31 employed learners. This programme is an important component of the succession plan that will see successful candidates contribute to the leadership pipeline in the business, and also addresses critical management skills identified through the current National Skills Development Strategy.

Driving green is a core objective at Europcar and greening ourselves is part of our company-wide commitment to protecting and preserving the environment. Whilst we will never lose sight of our primary goal of providing an incredibly effective and personal car rental service, we believe that ensuring sustainability throughout all our operations is a tough, yet exciting challenge, that we are capable of meeting. Resource saving is hugely positive for the environment and we're constantly finding ways to make this happen. Significantly, our aim is to reduce our outputs, not just offset them.

Europcar treats sustainability as a business imperative and that is why we have instilled tangible measures to drastically reduce our carbon footprint. Water & waste recycling facilities at our depots, rationalisation of office printers and sensor lighting at our head office, are just a few examples of the changes we've made so far.
