Major projects that Deloitte supported during this financial year include:
Future leaders development programme (FLDP)
This programme was established to actively facilitate the employment of unemployed graduates in the country. The FLDP entails the recruitment, formal training and provision of workplace experience to a selected group of graduates, recruited from the Thusanani Workplace Readiness project, sponsored by the Financial and Advisory Services Sector Education and Training Authority (FASSET). The 2008 intake saw a staggering 82% of the graduates successfully employed by various business units within Deloitte.
Project Siyakhula
A programme which is run by Deloitte trainee accountants across South Africa to assist disadvantaged pupils from townships in areas of accounting and mathematics. They have assisted over 1000 students (Grade 10s, 11s and Grade12s) and the success of this programme has been seen from some of the learners being recognised by the Department of Education as top learners in the various regions. Our 2009 programme has also seen the introduction of a leadership and development programmes which ultimately seeks to help students harness their unique leadership potential and to empower them to become phenomenal leaders.
Thuthuka Trust
Thuthuka trust is the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants transformation initiative to promote the study of Mathematics, Science and English at school level. In so doing, Thuthuka works to develop teaching skills in these areas and provides bursaries for students from disadvantaged backgrounds wanting to pursue chartered Accountancy as a career. Deloitte makes a grant contribution towards Thuthuka annually towards the bursary fund.
Junior Achievement South Africa (JASA)
JASA offers a range of education programmes to school going children and teenagers from all communities concerning the benefits of the free enterprise system, the nature of enterprise and entrepreneurship. The purpose of JASA is to prepare young people for life after school by raising their awareness of economic issues, teaching them entrepreneurial and life skills, providing them with an understanding of the business world and enhancing their sense of personal responsibility through practical business experience. Deloitte has supported JASA financially to enable Project Siyakhula schools to benefit from the programme.
LEAP Science and Maths School
LEAP is a school for exceptional but disadvantaged high school pupils from local townships. Their aim is to enable the students to gain access to tertiary study opportunities by graduating from the school with a university exemption, particularly with Science and Maths on higher grade. LEAP also provides many opportunities such as extra lessons, youth and community involvement, feeder schemes, crèches, and life coaching, among others. Deloitte Foundation supported LEAP with a financial grant to integrate Project Siyakhula Cape Town among other activities with LEAP projects.
Jumpstart
Jumpstart is an innovative career guidance and life skills booklet targeted at Grade 9 to Grade 12 learners in schools countywide. Jumpstart educates, empowers and uplifts the learners and the educators/facilitators, by disseminating crucial information relating to self knowledge, skills development, entrepreneurship, health awareness, career guidance and many other topics that are relevant to society. Deloitte Foundation made a financial grant to Jumpstart and continues to distribute the handbooks to various schools.
Sparrow Schools
Sparrow Schools provides affordable, specialised education to disadvantaged and disabled children between the ages of 7 and 18. Sparrow Schools run two separate educational projects and a job creation initiative. Situated in Johannesburg, the projects cater for 650 learners annually. These learners have varying degrees of educational backlog, remedial problems, learning difficulties and/ or intellectual disabilities. Deloitte Foundation supported Sparrow Schools with a grant contribution towards their enterprise development project.
Imperial Ukhamba Community Development Trust
Ukhamba's mission is to form synergies and partnerships with local and international companies wanting to make meaningful contributions to the advancement of people from previously disadvantaged groups. Deloitte assisted the Ukhamba trust to develop the pre-primary section of Fine Town Primary school in Vlakfontein.
ACFS Community Education and Feeding Scheme
The ACFS is a registered Non-Profit Organisation with a primary focus on combating malnutrition. The ACFS now reaches into many areas of Gauteng, alleviating poverty, running HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns, setting up and organising community and individual feeding initiatives and co-ordinating community upliftment programmes. Deloitte Foundation supported the ACFS with a grant contribution to start up an enterprise development initiative in beadwork and sewing projects to enable the beneficiaries to become self sustainable.
Helping Hands programme - Charities Aid Foundation Southern Africa (CAFSA)
Helping Hands is the Deloitte staff voluntary giving programme which allows employees to give money to charitable causes. For every Rand employees donate, the Deloitte Foundation will match that donation rand for rand. This enables the contributions to have a far bigger impact. The Charities Aid Foundation of Southern Africa (CAFSA) is Deloitte's partner in the Helping Hands scheme and administers and distributes the contributions to the beneficiaries.
Bokamoso Trust
Bokamoso Education Trust's primary vision is to provide the necessary financial support for each child's education (Grade 0 to 12). Secondary to this, we facilitate the opportunity for donors to take an active and personal role in the child's development through mentorship should they wish to do so. Vuleka is Bokamoso's partner and assists them in identifying these children in need. Deloitte Foundation supported Bokamoso with a financial grant towards the education of the beneficiaries.
TEACH South Africa
TEACH SA is a non-profit organisation which aims to effectively respond to declining learning performance in South Africa in the areas of Maths, Science, Technology and English by recruiting graduates to teach the subjects in disadvantaged schools, in urban and rural areas, for a period of two years. Successful candidates become TEACH SA Ambassadors and benefit from professional teacher training, business management and leadership skills training, holiday internships at corporates and networking opportunities with eminent people. Deloitte provided TEACH SA with human resource support and donated laptops.
Impact Day
IMPACT Day is a firm wide initiative that brings Deloitte staff closer to local communities. It is an enriching experience for all involved Deloitte staff to get personally involved to make a difference in the lives of the impoverished communities where we do business. On this day, Deloitte professionals around the world set aside their normal business commitments to go out and add value to the lives of the communities within which they operate. Some of the initiatives we undertake include organised visits to schools, crèches and various organisations to carry out repairs, planting trees, providing career guidance and skills training. Impact day is a further illustration of Deloitte's commitment to responsibility and sensitivity to our local communities.

Johannesburg, June 2010 - Recently released analysis of the Deloitte Best Company to Work for Survey for 2009 indicates that senior employees are happiest at work. This report reveals that employee satisfaction with their employers appears to increase with job level and age while females tend to report higher levels of contentment with their employers than their male counterparts.

With National Treasury forecasting a 2.3 percent growth for 2010, indicating that the recession is officially over, employees will no longer accept the issuance of large salary packages and bonuses for executives, while their financial incentives remain unaltered.

Cloud computing has been described as equivalent to using an electricity grid. Instead of maintaining a full IT infrastructure, companies using this model 'plug into' a cloud solution, which is provided by a third party via the internet, as and when they need to. Another similarity with an electricity grid is that cloud computing service providers sometimes bill according to what is referred to as the utility computing model - in other words, customers pay according to their actual usage of resources from the grid. The alternative billing methodology is a subscription model.

Fraud is a global scourge which costs the typical organisation 5% of its annual turnover, estimated at $2.9 trillion globally. This is according to the 2010 annual report of the Association for Certified Fraud Examiners in the USA. The median loss in 1843 fraud cases worldwide between January 2008 and December 2009 was $160,000 while a quarter of the cases involved losses of at least $1 million.
