About us:

The University of Pretoria is one of South Africa's leading research universities and has also emerged as a leading research university on the African continent.

This has been gained through continuously having the highest number of research outputs since 1997 and also its collaborations in various national and international research fields. In 2009 UP was  ranked in the Top 500 of the Times Higher Education-World University Rankings (THES-QS). Annually, the University produces the highest number of doctoral graduates in the country.

Services We Offer:

The University of Pretoria has nine faculties and boasts the only faculty of Veterinary Science in the country.

The University of Pretoria develops its students as well-rounded, creative people, responsible and productive citizens, and future leaders. This is achieved by offering a variety of cultural activities, sports, art and music.

Having celebrated 100 years (since its inception) in 2008, the University is steeped in tradition and academic excellence which contributes to the country's future prosperity. Our alumni, who may be found on executive boards of national and international organisations, can attest to this legacy.

The University of Pretoria was awarded the Top Gender Empowered Company in the Education Category on 9 September at the Sandton Convention Centre Ballroom. The awards ceremony, hosted by Topco Media, was attended by 500 ministers, government officials and top business leaders.

The University of Pretoria was awarded the prize for an outstanding exhibit with the theme "All the sciences in motion" at the 2010 SciFest Africa Exhibition.

The University of Pretoria (UP) scooped the coveted first prize for the "Best Exhibition" and the "Best science show" in the tertiary institutions category at the Sasol Techno X. UP's exhibition theme was "Science in a bottle" where UP's science shows and demonstrations illustrated how UP goes green. The learners were taught how to recycle and make science projects by using soft drink bottles. Teachers, particularly from under-resourced schools were provided with manuals to help them perform some of the science experiments.

In mid July, the Financial Mail showed the educational offerings of South Africa's top business schools. UP's Gordon Insitute of Business School was one of the 12 business schools that took part in the survey and it came out tops in many of the categories. Gordon Insitute of Business School finished ahead of the only three other South African schools (Cape Town, Stellenbosch and Wits) to make the top 50 in the Executive Education and Company Specific programmes categories. Gordon Institute of Business School also features prominently in the Financial Mail's analysis of executive education in that it offers more courses and attracts more participants than any other school.

The University of Pretoria's RAG team (TuksRAG) was awarded the best in the Academia Category at a Gala Dinner by the Executive Major of Tshwane, Dr Gwen Ramokgopa. The Gala Dinner was hosted as part of the Nelson Mandela Legacy Celebration that is celebrated each year by the City of Tshwane on Mandela Day.

Prof John Dugard from the University of Pretoria's Centre for Human Rights was a recipient of the 2010 Gruber Foundation International Prize.

Prof Christof Heyns, Dean of the Faculty of Law, was appointed by the United Nations as Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary and arbitrary executions.

The University of Pretoria has integrated Social Economic Development and Enterprise Development under the banner of Community Engagement from where a wide range of projects are run annually - far exceeding legal compliance. In addition, hundreds of projects/ initiatives are executed by various Faculties throughout the university as part of the community engagement programme.

Some of the projects/initiatives aimed at female empowerment include:

South African Women in Dialogue (SAWID). This is an initiative led by Ms Zanele Mbeki in partnership with UP to unite women in diversity. The main aim is to create conducive discussion platforms with regards to poverty, ethnicity, crime etc and propose appropriate programmes that South African women can utilize to promote peace, security and stability in their communities and on the continent.
Capacity - building for SMME's with programmes established in Mamelodi, Villiers and Ingwavuma.
Various other projects in partnership with religious organizations in the Mamelodi, Soshanguve, Moloto and KwaMhlanga regions:
R23 m spent on Preferential Procurement to businesses with more than 30% black female ownership
R16,8m spent in 2009 from own funds on bursaries granted to female individuals

Capacity -building for SMME's

By means of the Capacity Building Facility for Small and Medium Manufacturing Enterprises (SMME's), new technology and methodology is introduced and integrated in sustaining SMME's. Here rural women are provided with the necessary knowledge and skills to solve business problems and build their capacity in planning and output by means of improved production and marketing activities. SMME's have been established in:

Mamelodi

The Sphiwe Sewing Project (school blazers are manufactured and embroidered).
The Melodima Project (on UP's Mamelodi Campus) to empower women who are victims of HIV/AIDS.
Villiers

Kgatelopele Needle Work Project
(manufacturing of clothing, school ware, sports ware, curtains and linen).

Ingwavuma

Fancy Stitch (an embroidery project).

Other projects in the Mamelodi, Soshanguve, Moloto and KwaMahlanga regions include - in partnership with church organisations - support to child-headed-families, foster parents and to students and their families who are affected by mental illness such as schizophrenia or depression.
