Together with the department of agriculture, KWV established the South African Wine Industry Trust in 1999, and committed to donate to the trust a total of R369 million over a period of 10 years. The trust has used 45% of this money to benefit previously disadvantaged communities in the wine industry.

Since its last payment to the trust, KWV has started developing its own corporate social investment programme.

The guidelines for social economic development initiatives are:

All projects should be in Paarl, Worcester or Robertson.
Seventy-five percent of the beneficiaries should be generic black as per the government definition
The project should be addressing a pressing need in the community.
KWV should be able to measure its impact in the communities.
KWV should be able to get points on the BBBEE scorecard.
Funding was given to the following projects:

Pebbles Project

The purpose is to enrich the lives of children from disadvantaged backgrounds with special educational needs, especially those whose lives are affected by alcohol, through providing support and training to local wine farm and township crèches and establishing after-school provision for older children living in the Winelands.

In 2009, the Pebbles Project will be working with over 500 children aged 2 - 16 with approximately 200 of these children in the 6 - 16-year-old age bracket in the After-School Clubs (ASCs) which were set up by Pebbles. These ASCs offer a range of skills development activities and homework programmes for the learners. The learners go out on one educational trip per month and participate in a number of exciting art, sport, lifeskills, and drama and music workshops.

JA School of Music

The aim of the school to keep the children off the street away from the negative activities such as drug, gangsterism and alcohol abuse. The school has about
71 children from around the townships and farm communities in Paarl. The music classes are held in the afternoon. Part of the requirements for admittance to this school is that students do well in their school work and therefore school reports are submitted. This project is not receiving funding from government or any corporate. The founder of the school has been tracking the progress of all previous students of whom some are now at tertiary institutions.

Skills Project - Flagship

KWV objectives

To make a positive, sustainable impact on the communities in which KWV operates through investing in improving the quality of life and prosperity of disadvantaged communities.
To empower selected members of the local community with the intention of equipping them with the skills necessary to enter the hospitality industry.
Overall Benefits of Training Project:

Create employment for the people of Paarl.
Skills and knowledge transfer. Set the stage to progress to further wine training and the development of a new career path (professional waiters and/or sommeliers)
Help to prepare the community for 2010.

Expected course outcomes:

Trainees will gain a basic and fundamental understanding of customer service and wine. With the transfer of knowledge, trainees will be empowered to gain employment in hospitality and wine industry.

About the training

The training course is designed around the basic understanding of food and wine in a hospitality establishment. The biggest advantage of this course is that it has been designed specifically with the aim of developing under privileged people. The course goes beyond a tourist experience to give learners a new understanding coupled with skills in basic customer relations, up-selling and tailoring through food and wine pairing and transforms the wine waiter's ability to create an unrivaled experience for any guest.
